Much has happened over the weekend! First, a group of 10 Norwich cadets helped with trail work on Saturday, January 29th. We did some great work in preparation for the snowmobile club using some of our trails, with both groups attempting to minimize the conflicts. We did a partial bypass down a steep hill, on the pink trail descending north out of Sherwood Forest. We also worked on the extension of the northerly part of “North Street Ridge”, where the snowmobile club person worked with Geoff to find the best path northward.
The snowmobile club worked Sunday, January 30th to finish the work on the link through Sherwood Forest. Anyone skiing there this week will likely will notice new snowmobile signs directing snowmobilers. The snowmobile club encountered some challenges working on the steep section, which inadvertently caused some damage to their equipment. They are now questioning whether that part of the link will actually work for them, so we’ll see what happens.
Additionally, people should be careful on the trail, as the recent trail grading work and related traffic through there has stirred up a bunch of dirt.
The Norwich students also helped clear out and spruce up a new trail that goes West and across the street from West Wind Meadow. We need more snow to groom the trail before it’s ready for public use, but it looks like we may get enough snow in the middle of the week to groom and open it up!
Many thanks to Norwich University organizing the volunteer efforts, as well as the students who helped us on a very cold day! Also, many thanks to Nancy Chickering, who came out and helped Geoff lead this big, wonderful group from Norwich on Saturday! there are so many ways to appreciate Nancy’s contribution, including her efforts in gathering tools for the volunteers, bringing clothes for improperly dressed students, and being an inspirational leader, not to mention being a skilled chainsaw operator, picture taker, and a hard worker in tough conditions!
